AirBaltic, Ryanair and Germanwings launch new routes

New routes from airBaltic

By the end of summer 2008, airBaltic (http://www.airbaltic.com/) has planned to launch 9 new exciting routes which will help to reach the target of 48 destinations by the end of year. The state-owned airline airBaltic transported a little more than 2 million passengers during 2007, a remarkable 41% increase compared to 2006, when the total number of airBaltic passengers reached 1 425 276.

The new routes from Riga are to: Venice (Italy), Nice (France), Ålesund (Norway), Billund (Denmark), Sochi (Russia), Yerevan (Armenia), Kishinev (Moldova), Alma-Ata (Kazakhstan) and Kuopio (Finland).

As passenger demand increases, airBaltic has planned to increase the number of flights from Riga to: Berlin (up to 3 times a day), Paris (7 times a week), Rome (5 times a week), Oulu (4 times a week), Vilnius (up to 4 times a day), Tbilisi (5 times a week), Odessa (7 times a week), Liepaja (17 times a week) and others.

Ryanair launches new route to Milan

Ryanair (http://www.ryanair.com/), Europe’s leading low cost airline, added another route to Riga Airport. Starting this January Ryanair will fly directly to Milan Bergamo Airport. This will be the 12th destination serviced by Ryanair, who expect to bring in excess of 1 million passengers to Riga in 2008.

Germanwings to launch flights from RIX in May

The German budget airline Germanwings (http://www.germanwings.com/) will start operating in Latvia from the 2nd of May between Riga and Cologne, flying three times a week on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. These are the first direct flights between the two cities. Tickets are available online.

This is the first time Germanwings will have presence in Riga International Airport. With addition of Germanwings, the number of airlines operating from Riga has reached 16.

Germanwings which carried over 7 million passengers in 2006 was founded in October 2002 as a German budget airline. Germanwings headquarters are located in Cologne. It now has more than thousand employees and operates 27 Airbus A319/A320 aircraft. Turnover in 2006 reached 560 m EUR. All Germanwings flights in Europe have prices starting from EUR 19 including airport taxes.
