Smurfit Kappa Packaging

The Smurfit Kappa Group is a world leader in paper-based packaging with a forefront position in Europe and a strong position in Latin America. It has sales in excess of € 7 billion and employs over 40,000 employees, operating in over 30 countries worldwide.

Initially, Smurf it Kappa Packaging entered the Latvian market by exporting its products to Latvia from a plant in neighbouring Lithuania. However, once the potential of the Latvian market’s booming economy was realised, the decision to establish a packaging solutions production plant in Latvia was made to take advantage of the countries growing needs.

Operating under, Smurfit Kappa Denmark a subsidiary of the Smurfit Kappa Group, which also operates in Denmark, Lithuania and Germany, the company built a factory to provide Latvia with customised, high quality and innovative packaging solutions. The purpose of this new facility is specifically to supply the rapidly expanding domestic market.

In September 2006, Kappa Packaging signed a contract for the lease of 2600 square meters of production space in NP Jelgava Business Park, located just 50 minutes from Riga airport, and in the beginning of 2007 had launched its operations.

This represents yet another example how a foreign investor discovered an excellent location in one of Latvia’s many industrial parks. Currently the number and size of these industrial parks is increasing rapidly in locations all across Latvia, both in urban areas and in greenfield site locations.

Kappa Packaging has plans to continue taking advantage of Latvia’s booming economy and intends to expand its operations in the country, building upon the success of entering the new, profitable market that is still growing.
