Grant Instruments

One of the greatest business success stories in 2004 was the collaboration between Grant Instruments based in the UK, and Latvia's own BioSan, both makers of high-tech parts and technology for the biotech market.

Grant is a world leader in the manufacture and design of equipment for sample preparation, scientific analysis, data acquisition and data analysis providing solutions to the global scientific and industrial markets. BioSan was founded by a group of scientists from the Institute of Microbiology in the Academy of Science of the Latvian Republic who have started to develop innovative laboratory instruments.

The key reason for the merger was that it enabled Grants Instruments to use BioSan’s high-tech profile, highly valued R&D capabilities and its acquired expertise to enter the life science market without having to start from scratch. In return Grants Instruments invaluable experience and marketing knowledge worked well for BioSan. The success of the collaboration has significantly benefited both parties and they are confident that their success and collaboration will continue into the future.

“I believe the most important factor in our success is that each company benefits equally from the other: BioSan offers Grant innovation and life science expertise along with superb products that are competitively priced for sale throughout the world. BioSan also provides Grant with access to new markets in the Baltic States, Russia and the CIS. Grant, meanwhile, offers BioSan access to worldwide markets with the backing of a respected 50-year-old brand. In addition, Grant has a wealth of knowledge and experience in manufacturing quality products to the world-wide standards which BioSan needs to meet in order to compete in the USA and Western Europe.”

“I have found that the help and information sources provided by the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia and the British Chamber of Commerce in Latvia offer all the information I would need to find a partner. In addition, there is no replacement for visiting Latvia, making contact with the bodies mentioned, and then networking: it is a small place and you quickly meet many people, many of whom are willing to help or to introduce you to someone else who can!”
