Latvia continues to strengthen its role in developing innovative and sustainable solutions for the Baltic Sea region through the MarTe project, funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe programme.
As a project partner, the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA) contributes to fostering collaboration between research institutions, businesses and public organisations to accelerate the development and market adoption of maritime technologies.
During the recent MarTe webinar, experts from across the Baltic Sea region explored key trends shaping the future of the blue economy. Discussions highlighted the growing importance of smart ports, clean maritime transport, autonomous technologies, environmental monitoring solutions and digital tools supporting sustainable marine spatial planning.
More than 50 maritime technologies have been assessed within the project to identify those with the greatest potential for the Baltic Sea region. Promising areas include offshore renewable energy support, sustainable aquaculture, alternative fuels, digital monitoring systems and smart port solutions.
As geopolitical and energy transitions reshape regional logistics and infrastructure, Baltic ports are evolving into innovation hubs supporting offshore wind, clean energy solutions and advanced maritime services. These developments create new opportunities for companies, technology providers and international partnerships.
Digital technologies, including marine digital twins, are also expected to play an increasingly important role by enabling data-driven decision-making for sustainable use of marine resources and coastal development.
