From September 24 to 26, Minister of Economics Viktors Valainis, together with 180 representatives of businesses and organizations, will participate in a trade mission to Hamburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. On September 25, Prime Minister Evika Siliņa will also join the trade mission to participate in a business forum and meet with senior officials from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
This trade mission brings together more than 100 Latvian companies from various sectors – from biotechnology and sustainable energy to financial technology, information technology, and the defense industry.
Germany is the third largest economy in the world and one of the leading innovation and industrial powers. It is Latvia's second most important foreign trade partner, with a total trade volume of €4.98 billion in 2024. Germany is also Latvia's third largest export market, second largest import partner and main destination for Latvian service exports. In the first half of 2025, exports of goods to Germany increased by 4% to EUR 641.7 million, while exports of services increased by 6% to EUR 355 million.
Economics Minister Viktors Valainis: "This is the largest trade mission by Latvian entrepreneurs to date and also the largest business delegation ever to visit Hamburg and Rostock. This confirms our strategic goal of forging closer economic ties with Germany. The aim of the visit is to increase Latvian exports to Germany by 10% and to initiate at least four new investment projects. By meeting with political leaders, businesses, port and university representatives in Hamburg and Rostock, we will create cooperation platforms that will open up new opportunities for Latvian companies."
The trade mission offers companies thematic programs in seven areas: defense industry, construction, logistics, biotechnology, smart energy, financial technology, and information technology.
In Hamburg, Riga Technical University and HafenCity University will sign a memorandum of cooperation that will mark closer cooperation in research and the development of sustainable urban solutions. Economics Minister Viktors Valainis will meet with Hamburg Finance Senator Andreas Dressel to discuss public sector support models for financial technology companies and the development of digital services, where Latvian companies can offer their solutions to Germany. Special attention will be paid to green energy projects during a meeting with Hamburg Deputy Mayor Katharina Fegebank and leading Hamburg energy companies. The largest Latvian public-private partnership projects, including Rail Baltica and Riga Airport development projects, are also planned to be presented in Hamburg. Latvian Minister of Economics Viktors Valainis will also meet with Hamburg Senator for Economics and Innovation Dr. Melanie Leonhard to discuss economic cooperation between Latvia and Hamburg and the further progress of the Memorandum on Marine Technology and Digital Innovation signed in June. The memorandum brings together such important partners as LMT, Riga Freeport, SIA Elektroniskie sakari and LVR Flote from Latvia, as well as the Hamburg Port Authority and the Hamburg Port Fleet from Germany.
The Latvian-German Business Day in Rostock will bring together more than 250 participants who will focus on the development of the energy, digitalization, infrastructure, and defense industries. The event will be opened by Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig. Panel discussions will be organized with Latvian Minister of Economics Viktors Valainis, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Minister of Economics Wolfgang Blank, and Latvian and German business leaders. As part of the program, the delegation will visit the Rostock-based Nordex Energy production facility, one of Europe's leading wind turbine manufacturing centers, and H2APEX, a company that develops green hydrogen production and infrastructure. A visit is also planned to EEW Special Pipe Construction, which manufactures foundations for offshore wind farms and has expressed interest in development opportunities in Latvia.
Ieva Jāgere, Director of LIAA, points out: “Latvia has historically developed close economic ties with Germany, especially Northern Germany. In terms of volume, Germany is the largest manufacturing country in Europe, with industrial production accounting for 20 percent of GDP, compared to an EU average of 15 percent and Latvia's 13 percent. This opens up wide opportunities for cooperation and integration into value chains together with German companies. This trade mission, involving more than 100 companies, confirms that Latvian companies have the ambition and desire to be more widely represented in the global market."
