The potential of the Latvian food industry
The food industry in Latvia accounts for approximately 20 percent of total exports of goods and is a significant economic driver. The industry is actively investing in biotechnology, food supplements, etc. Latvia's participation in EIT Food — a European initiative that promotes innovation and sustainable development in the food sector by bringing together science, business and society to address global food challenges — provides access to European-level support and knowledge. EIT Food is supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union.
Main discussion topics:
- Latvian support instruments for the introduction of technologies in the food industry - an overview of funding and support programs.
- Attracting funding and investment, challenges and risks.
- Cooperation between academia and business in promoting innovation.
- Examples of international experience and Latvia's potential as a regional leader.
For example, the Latvian startup Farms Neamo, which is part of the EIT Food ecosystem and has received EIT Food support, demonstrates the ability of Latvian innovative companies to successfully integrate into the European food innovation network.

About EIT Food
EIT Food is the world’s largest and most dynamic food innovation community. We accelerate innovation to build a future-fit food system that produces healthy and sustainable food for all.
Supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union, we invest in projects, organisations and individuals that share our goals for a healthy and sustainable food system. We unlock innovation potential in businesses and universities and create and scale agrifood startups to bring new technologies and products to market. We equip entrepreneurs and professionals with the skills needed to transform the food system and put consumers at the heart of our work, helping build trust by reconnecting them to the origins of their food.
We are one of nine innovation communities established by the European Institute for Innovation & Technology (EIT), an independent EU body set up in 2008 to drive innovation and entrepreneurship across Europe.
